Despite spending very little time there as of late, both the State and Michigan Theaters in Ann Arbor Michigan have truly made me fall in love with watching movies again
The Texas Theatre in Dallas is my favorite. They do tons of classic and independent movies, host the Oak Cliff Film Festival every year, and get enough new releases to keep the "normal" movie goers (like myself) interested. Plus they have live podcasts, comedy shows, and music.
Two fun facts about the Texas Theatre. It was the first movie theater in Dallas to have air conditioning. And it's the only movie theater in America with a direct connection to the JFK assassination. Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested at the Texas Theatre and every November 22nd they show the movies that were playing on 11/22/63.
love this!!!! my actual favorite movie theater of all time is the now tragically closed amc loews seacourt 10 in my hometown of toms river, new jersey… a formative place from my youth where the employees didn’t care whether you lived or died and i snuck into an array of movies when i was underage including drive and literally j edgar
My favorite is the late, great Oak Street Cinema in Minneapolis (not just because I met my wife and got married there but because I saw so many amazing movies that changed my life) but the best current theater here is the Heights. It was built in 1926, is beautiful, shows first run and lots of repertory films, often shows 35mm and 70mm prints and features live organ accompaniments before the show. Just a local gem (supported in part by the Dairy Queen next door).
My favorite in the US is The Artcraft Theatre in Franklin, IN. A total community hub, with a cartoon, a skit, a "who travelled furthest" contest before the weekend evening shows. Usually shows A Christmas Story every holiday season and gives away a Red Ryder BB gun.
Grand Lake Theater in Oakland! In memoriam for The Castro and the Landmark at the Embarcadero, two of the best in SF, gone too soon.
Grand Lake is iconic I'm planning a trip soon!
Seconded Grand Lake! Truly iconic place.
Hollywood Theater in Portland Oregon
Iconic theater!

That marquee!!!
That theater is a big reason I love going to the movies, and the only LA place that even approximates my memories is the New Beverly
me US-trekking to go to all of these
LFG
Will join in pouring one out for E Street Cinema, my lifeline in my awful month spent interning in D.C. (derogatory)
Omg we need to band together and bring it back
i nominated a/perture in my hometown back in winston salem, nc 🙏 trying to keep indie films alive in small towns
Need to reach out to you for the next edition & hear more about a/perture!
I used to work at a/perture and can second what a special place it is!
