1. What’s your favorite day & time to go to the movies?

2pm on summer Fridays—no work, kids are in school, height of “popcorn movie” season. Feels almost like playing hooky.

2. What’s your favorite movie theater?

Growing up in Providence, there was a theater called the Cable Car that doesn’t exist anymore, but was a super funky space with all found furniture couches and mismatched chairs for seating, and they were doing indie films and off-the-beaten-path stuff when no one else really was (at least not in Rhode Island). I went on one of my first dates there to a screening of Mononoke Hime—didn’t see the boy again but became an anime fan for the rest of my life.

3. What’s your go-to movie theater snack & drink combo?

Milk duds and an absolutely enormous Diet Coke.

4. What’s your dream movie theater snack & drink combo (if noise and sound weren’t an issue)?

I like a little variety, just mix it up. When you go to see as many movies as I do, the menu gets predictable. I love the theaters that do fun special meals and cocktails tied to the films. I fully embrace a theme.

5. First movie you remember seeing in a theater?

The Little Mermaid in 1989 because I had been looking forward to it so much that we cut out a picture from the newspaper and had it on the refrigerator all summer counting down to opening weekend.

6. Last movie you saw in a theater?

Last night I went to the New York premiere of a movie my husband edited called Busboys with David Spade and Theo Von and ended up getting roped into moderating the Q&A.

7. Is there a movie you wish you could have seen in a theater?

The original Scream. I was a little too young when it came out, so I had to settle for sneaking a VHS out of Blockbuster. I watched it constantly and became obsessed with horror movies as a teen. Seeing that opening night with an audience in 1996 would’ve been incredible.

8. Have you ever seen a movie more than once in theaters?

Also from the mid-90s and my mid-teens, I admit to seeing Titanic five times in the theater. I was scheduled to see it a 6th and final time but I got very sick and my mom let me sleep through it and I still haven’t forgiven her.

9. Do you stay through the credits or leave once the film ends?

I see so many of my films at festivals, often back-to-back at different venues, so I am constantly choosing between staying for the Q&A or sprinting to be on time to the next thing.

10. What’s one thing you would change to make movie theaters better?

I actually hate the luxury seating trend. Every theater is now so small and you are so spread out, and suddenly there are only 10 people in the room. Bring back big, packed 200 person theaters with those velvet non-reclining seats.

11. Tell me about an especially memorable moviegoing experience that stands out in your mind.

Way before I self identified as a ‘movie person’, I was probably 12 or 13, my family was on vacation skiing in Park City. As luck would have it, it was the same time as Sundance was going on, and after watching it from afar for several days, I asked my dad if we could go to something. We just picked whatever movie was not sold out that night, and I remember it was an entirely age-inappropriate French film at the Egyptian, but some kind of switch flipped and I think a little part of me was like “yep, I’m doing this forever.”

Another was Opening Night at Tribeca in 2011. I had only worked there for a couple years and the festival opened with a documentary featuring Elton John, which we screened outdoors on the waterfront downtown. He performed afterwards, and dedicated “Your Song” to New York City and I was so genuinely moved and overcome with how beautiful it was and how lucky I was to be a part of that moment.

12. What’s a movie you’re looking forward to seeing?

I am heading to Cannes in a couple weeks so there is a lot I am looking forward to: Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, Her Private Hell, Full Phil. And of course all the ones I don’t even know to look forward to but will end up being incredible surprises.

Also my five year old son is obsessed with kaiju movies and I got us tickets to a screening of Terror of Mechagodzilla next weekend and he doesn’t know it yet.

13. What’s your dream combination of director and lead(s)?

It would be fun to pair people across eras -- Hitchcock and Scarlett Johansson, or Wes Anderson with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

14. If you could live in a movie, which one would it be?

In the Mood for Love.

15. Why do you think people should continue seeing movies at the movie theater?

Shared experience, shared culture, discovery, conversation, change your point of view, be transported, have fun, support independent artists, eat candy. Why would you not see movies in theaters?

1. What’s your favorite day & time to go to the movies?

3pm on a weekday (I love being the only person in a movie theatre) or noon on a weekend (it helps to be in a cool, dark room and nursing a massive Diet Coke when you’re recovering from a night out).

2. What’s your favorite movie theater?

I love the Laemmle Glendale or AMC at the Americana, depending on what I’m watching. If I’m going to the Laemmle, I’ll probably go have a meal at Raffi’s before or after. If I’m going to the Americana, it’s the Cheesecake Factory. I’m a Cheesecake Rewards member which means I have the great privilege of making reservations.

These became my go-to movie theatres over the last couple of years because I’ve lived near bus stops for the 180 route, which drops you off right in front of the Americana, during that period of time. But I genuinely find the Americana, and Glendale more broadly, to be a relaxing place to be (especially when you don’t have to park a car). The Americana during Christmastime is so special. I wish Rick Caruso wasn’t the actual devil.

3. What’s your go-to movie theater snack & drink combo?

If I’m not hitting Cheesecake or Raffi’s, I’ll make the bold choice of getting the AMC chicken tenders, with a large Diet Coke.

4. What’s your dream movie theater snack & drink combo (if noise and sound weren’t an issue)?

Pie in the sky? Popcorn chicken or popcorn shrimp, sliders, and a natural chilled red or pét nat.

5. First movie you remember seeing in a theater?

We didn’t really go to the movie theatres a lot growing up—we didn’t have much money and it was a luxury. I have a vague memory of watching an animated film with my dad at the Gardena Cinema (back when it was still a second run cinema and the tickets were $5) when I was really young. They’ve recently embraced their identity as a vintage cinema and play indie films and oldies. The family that owns it now has owned it since 1976, and they’ve never been able to afford to renovate so there are still “cry rooms” from the 1940s upstairs, where patrons could sit with a crying baby.

So the first movie I actually remember seeing in a real cinema, hilariously, was Fahrenheit 9/11, which was politically important to my family because we’re Arab and Muslim. We watched that at another second-run cinema in the South Bay, the Redondo Beach Cinema 3.

6. Last movie you saw in a theater?

I’m sad to say the last time I was in a movie theatre was to watch The Testament of Ann Lee at the Burbank 16 back in January. (I get a lot of screeners and watch a lot of stuff at home!) We went to Pinocchio’s after.

7. Is there a movie you wish you could have seen in a theater?

Mustang by Deniz Gamze Ergüven. I saw it many years ago in a theatre full of like, white NPR listeners, but I wish I could see it again in a theatre full of my sisters, and I use that word loosely.

8. Have you ever seen a movie more than once in theaters?

No, I have a hard time finding the time for rewatches.

9. Do you stay through the credits or leave once the film ends?

Unless a friend is involved in making the film, I’d leave soon after the credits begin.

10. What’s one thing you would change to make movie theaters better?

Movie theatres are too cold! I’d turn up the temp a smidge. I also think bathrooms should be closer to the actual screens and there should also be a soda machine refill right outside so you don’t have to walk far.

11. Tell me about an especially memorable moviegoing experience that stands out in your mind.

On Christmas a couple of years ago my partner and two best friends and I went to watch the Robbie William’s CGI monkey biopic, Better Man, without any kind of context for what we were walking into. I think I cried through the entire second half of the film. My two best friends, who are screenwriters, left the theatre screaming “NOW THAT WAS CINEMA!”.

My favorite moviegoing experiences are ones where you kind of walk in blind, with low expectations. That happened to me with Kaouther Ben Hania’s Four Daughters, too, which I watched at the Los Feliz 3. A very different kind of film, haha.

12. What’s a movie you’re looking forward to seeing?

Blue Heron and Maddie’s Secret, both of which I missed seeing at the Los Angeles Festival of Movies, due to my own scheduling errors.

13. What’s your dream combination of director and lead(s)?

I really want to see Jenna Ortega make a movie that’s good for change. I want to see more of Jodie Turner Smith on screen too. Maybe with someone like… Mira Nair? I don’t know! I don’t want to upset the Letterbox users.

14. If you could live in a movie, which one would it be?

I have a boring millennial answer, which is Amélie.

15. Why do you think people should continue seeing movies at the movie theater?

Watching films together is a beautiful way to connect to people, even if you’re not interacting with each other directly. I watched Weapons alone at a movie theatre in SF where I was on a solo trip. We screamed together. We laughed together. There is a dopamine response to that kind of collective experience. Of course, hearing your own emotions echoed by others in a movie theatre can be affirming.

You get a form of permission from your fellow movie-goers—to scream or laugh or give voice to whatever primal responses you are having to the art—and that permission can be rescinded if you get too loud or disruptive. In that way, theatres are places where you practice being part of a community. And we need more of that.

1. What’s your favorite day & time to go to the movies?

Saturday at 3pm!!! When I was younger my greatest passion was the first Thursday preview show, but mama’s gettin’ old.

2. What’s your favorite movie theater?

There are so many wonderful, brand spanking new theaters — chicly designed, elevated snacks — that are doing it right. In London, Everyman Cinema near our house has reclining chairs and fancy sodas and you feel like you’re at a spa that happens to be playing PTA.

But I’ll always love the theaters that have a connection to the period in which I was falling in love with movies. Like Cobble Hill Cinemas, the independent faux-art deco (Feco??) theater where I went on my first ever date with a group of like twenty 7th graders, to see What Dreams May Come, and my “boyfriend” sat two rows back.

Or the Angelika, around the corner from my childhood home, where I would make my parents slow down so I could study every poster on the way to the supermarket.

The Moviehouse in Millerton, NY is the most fun Christmas you can have. For some reason, my clearest Moviehouse memory is thinking there was a massive, terrible thunderstorm brewing and then realizing that Saving Private Ryan was playing in the other theater while we watched There’s Something About Mary.

I miss Sunshine Cinema, Regal Court Street and so many other spots around the city where my cinematic self determination occurred. Thank God we still have Cinema Village, Anthology Film Archives and Film Forum.

3. What’s your go-to movie theater snack & drink combo?

Large Diet Coke and small plain popcorn. It’s never not perfect.

I really want to forget my childhood nachos phase — the way that cheese stayed soft even as it got cold was very wrong.

4. What’s your dream movie theater snack & drink combo (if noise and sound weren’t an issue)?

I’d love to have a ginger beer with a slice of lime in a cold beer glass, and a giant, salty soft pretzel. Or maybe that’s just what I want right now?

5. First movie you remember seeing in a theater?

A screening of The Little Mermaid that a bunch of my preschool friends attended on a planned weekend outing. All of us little girls were in our Sunday best. I was rapt, in awe, right until the end when my mother had to carry me out screaming because I found the fact that Ariel has to leave her father at the end so upsetting. My mother kept saying “It’s a happy story! It’s a happy story!” as all of the other kids left in delight, but I can still remember how tragic and painful I found it (and my friends wonder why I still spend half my time living with my parents…)

6. Last movie you saw in a theater?

One Battle After Another — which is too long ago! Like many cinephiles who are also homebodies, my love of movies and my love of being on the couch with our dogs are always at war. This is a good time to resolve to shift the balance.

7. Is there a movie you wish you could have seen in a theater?

Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. I wish I’d been alive to watch a film print of it in West Hollywood in 1969.

8. Have you ever seen a movie more than once in theaters?

So many times — especially as a teenager. I think I went back to see Center Stage, 10 Things I Hate About You and The Royal Tenenbaums three times each. My parents weren’t overly generous with allowance, but they let me go to the movies and buy books with impunity, which were foundational gifts.

9. Do you stay through the credits or leave once the film ends?

If I love it, I’ll usually sit through the credits to collect my thoughts and feel the final song play out (and I always cheer if I see the name of someone I’ve worked with, even if they’re not there to hear me.)

10. What’s one thing you would change to make movie theaters better?

I feel like some genius engineer/architect could find a way to stagger seats so you are never blocked by a very tall man’s head or directly behind two girls whispering, and in the process stop countless incidents of hostility between strangers.

11. Tell me about an especially memorable moviegoing experience that stands out in your mind.

Just recently, I was lucky enough to host a screening of The Voice of Hind Rajab at the Roxy. The credits are silent, and as they rolled, all you heard was collective sobbing. While beautifully made, it’s a deeply painful film to watch, but also deeply necessary to see — and that moment of collective grief was powerful and rare.

12. What’s a movie you’re looking forward to seeing?

Disclosure Day — a huge alien epic is always thrilling to me (I’d watch Signs any time, any day) and Josh O’Connor in a Spielberg blockbuster feels like a compelling pairing.

13. What’s your dream combination of director and lead(s)?

Celine Song and Tilda Swinton.

14. If you could live in a movie, which one would it be?

Clueless! Always Clueless. I want to drive in Dionne’s Jeep wearing a plaid co-ord! I want to use Cher’s computerized closet system! I even want to hang out at that party in the Valley!

15. Why do you think people should continue seeing movies at the movie theater?

Of course there are all the business reasons, and the many ways going to the theater directly impacts the ability of artists to continue to make this work. But I’m gonna go more touchy-feely: Movie theaters are about more than just film — they’re about experiencing emotion in a group, about listening to other people laugh and gasp. They’re about learning to accept, tolerate and even enjoy a room full of people who may see the world differently than you do, but who are revealing their humanity and leaving themselves open to profound and vulnerable experiences in the safety of the collective. To me, a movie theater is a lot like church or temple or a mosque in that way: It can remind people that they’re not alone, that they’re held by something much bigger than we are.

Hi everyone. It’s 96 degrees in Los Angeles and it’s making me so sleepy. The few times I left my air-conditioned home in the past week were for, you guessed it, movies. I’ve been bringing this cutie notebook from McNally Jackson to screenings with me so here are some notes I took during the last few.

2pm Monday, Frank G. Wells Theater at Walt Disney Studios

Pre-screening: I’m on the Walt Disney Studios lot in Burbank to watch Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (thanks Searchlight and Agenda Collective!) and it’s a tough 90 degrees outside. The Starbucks on the lot is open this time (last time it was closed due to a fire) so I wanted to bring coffee in to the screening room but my grave mistake was going with a hot cappuccino (literally why?). Took a short walk around the lot and almost passed out so I had to switch the coffee out with a Diet Coke. I’ve never seen the lot this crowded, there’s filming going on for Nobody Wants This as well as some sorta conference.

Post-screening: I suspect I got this invite not because I’m a seasoned Ready or Not fan but because I talk about Shawn Hatosy nonstop on the internet and he’s part of the cast (led by Samara Weaving, who makes a fab final girl). Even though I knew this, nothing could have prepared me for the “hot new heartthrob in town” treatment this film gave Hatosy. Cinema! Not to mention him and Sarah Michelle Gellar play twin children of David Cronenberg. A sentence I didn’t think I would ever write.
